A Big, Beautiful Cousin Crew | Chautauqua Lake Family Photography

There’s a certain kind of magic that happens when you get a whole family — grandparents, parents, and a pile of cousins — together on Chautauqua Lake for a few hours. That’s exactly what happened with the Boland family this May, and I’m still thinking about it.

We started the session at a charming log cabin near Bemus Point, where an old antique tractor became the unofficial photo backdrop of the day. Five cousins climbed up, squished together, and immediately started cracking each other up — no direction needed. That’s my favorite kind of photo: the one where the kids forget I’m even there.

From the tractor, we wandered the lawn and let the cartwheels happen. Bare feet, flying hair, jean shorts mid-air — this is what childhood on the lake actually looks like, and it’s exactly what I want your family’s photos to hold onto. We gathered everyone on the cabin steps with the family dog wedged right in the middle (as he should be), then made our way down to the dock as the whole crew — down to the littlest one — walked out toward the water with the flag waving overhead.

My favorite moments, though, are always the quiet ones tucked between the big group shots — a mama pulling her daughter in close, foreheads touching, both of them laughing about some inside joke I’ll never know. Those are the photos families come back to years later and say, “that’s exactly how it felt.”
