Twins! | A Lakewood, NY At-Home Newborn Session
Some sessions I look forward to for months, and this one was one of them. The Sellstrom family welcomed twins this spring, and I got to spend a golden June morning with all four of them at their home in Lakewood, NY — half inside on the couch in soft morning light, half out in the yard under a rhododendron that could not have timed its bloom any better.
We started indoors, keeping things slow and easy while everyone settled in. There’s something so special about photographing newborns at home — no studio, no set, just their own couch, their own light, and two tiny babies in matching checkered rompers finding each other’s hands for the very first time on camera. Dad held one, mom held the other, and I just kept clicking as they traded that “can you believe we made these” look back and forth.
Once the babies were fed and happy, we moved outside to the yard, where the rhododendrons were in full, ridiculous bloom — that particular shade of pink that only seems to last about a week each year in Western New York. Mom tucked one baby against her shoulder while dad cradled the other, and for a few minutes it was just the four of them in a field of buttercups, not paying any attention to me at all. Those are always my favorite frames.
Newborn sessions move fast and feelings run high, especially with two babies instead of one. My goal is always to slow things down, let the family just be together, and capture what that particular season actually feels like — because it changes so quickly, and you’ll want to remember exactly how small they were.
