A Golden Evening on the Grounds: Lauren’s Chautauqua Lake Senior Session

Some senior sessions call for one location and a quick outfit change. Lauren’s called for the whole grounds. As a Chautauqua Lake Senior Photographer, I love when a senior is up for wandering — because Chautauqua Institution has more variety packed into its walkable streets than almost anywhere else I shoot, and Lauren’s session took full advantage of it.

Starting on the Athenaeum Lawn

We opened the evening on the sweeping lawn in front of the Athenaeum Hotel, letting the last of the daylight settle in behind her. It’s one of my favorite starting points for a senior session here — wide open, soft light, and that iconic hotel as a backdrop that immediately says Chautauqua.

Into the Gardens

From there we tucked into one of the Institution’s small, tucked-away gardens — the kind of spot most visitors walk right past. Lauren settled onto a set of old stone steps surrounded by petunias and climbing roses, and the light filtering through the greenery gave us some of the softest, most romantic frames of the whole session.

The Hall of Philosophy

No Chautauqua Lake senior photographer session feels complete without a stop at the Hall of Philosophy. Its open-air Greek Revival colonnade is unlike anything else on the grounds, and it gave Lauren’s portraits an elegant, almost dreamlike quality — especially with the evening light streaming in between the columns.

A Stop at the Girls’ Club

We kept wandering toward the Girls’ Club, where the yellow-and-sage clapboard porch and wide front steps made for a completely different mood — a little more relaxed, a little more “hometown summer evening.” Lauren changed into a fresh gingham dress here, and the shift in color and setting kept the whole gallery feeling varied rather than repetitive.

Barefoot on the Beach

As the sun dropped lower, we headed down to the lake. There’s nothing like Chautauqua Lake at golden hour — sailboats drifting in the background, that soft warm light on the water, and Lauren kicking off her shoes to run along the sand. These candid, in-motion shots are consistently the ones seniors and their families love most, because they capture personality, not just a pose.

Wrapping Up at 3 Taps

We closed out the evening at 3 Taps, letting the last bit of light and the relaxed, end-of-summer energy of the spot bring the whole session full circle — from polished portraits on the lawn to easy, laughing shots as the evening wound down.
