Some sessions carry a little extra weight, and this one certainly did. A few years ago, I had the honor of photographing Rebecca and Jordan’s wedding day. This month, as their Chautauqua Lake Newborn Photographer, I got to walk back into their lives for a completely different kind of milestone — welcoming their son, Elliott, home.
There’s something I love about in-home newborn sessions that a studio just can’t replicate: real light, a real nursery, a real dog wandering in and out of frame. We started simple, with Elliott swaddled in soft blue on the changing pad, taking in the quiet of his first days home. From there, we moved to a woven bassinet by the window, where the natural light did most of the work — soft and warm across his face as he stretched, yawned, and settled back to sleep.
We captured Elliott’s fingers curled around his mom’s hand, his impossibly small toes tucked between his parents’ wedding and engagement rings, and the quiet stripes of his going-home outfit against his mother’s arms. These are the images that families come back to years later — the ones that remind you just how small they really were.
After the up-close details, we brought the whole family into frame. Rebecca and Jordan stood together in the nursery, Elliott tucked against his mother’s chest. Dad scooped him up onto the chair for a few quiet snuggles, and their sweet doggo planted herself right beside them — clearly not willing to miss a single photo of the newest family member.
As a Chautauqua Lake Newborn Photographer, I always encourage new parents to consider an in-home session, especially in those first couple of weeks. A few reasons why:
Photographing a family’s wedding and then, a few years later, their newborn is one of the quiet joys of this work. Watching Rebecca and Jordan go from a couple exchanging vows to two parents wrapped up in their son was a full-circle moment I won’t forget — and it’s exactly why I love being a Chautauqua Lake Newborn Photographer for families throughout this community.
If you’re expecting or have a new little one at home in the Chautauqua Lake area, I’d love to capture this season for your family too. In-home newborn sessions are best booked while you’re still pregnant, so I can plan around your due date and get to your home within that sweet first-week-or-two window.
